16. They're Full of Energy

This superior breed of dog has great energy and endurance. The reason why they’re full of energy is because in the early days when the breed was developed, they were used to spending long periods of time outdoors, often working for their masters at strenuous activities that required physical effort and stamina.
The fact is that they thrive on activities like this because they’re full of energy. The flip side to this is worth pointing out here too. If their exercise needs are not met in the context of their high levels of energy, this dog can become destructive, especially if he is a young dog and kept in a confined space. The simplest way of putting it is to say that the Golden Retriever is primarily an dog for outdoors because they’re full of energy instinctively due to their breeding and experience.
Whether or not you can meet their exercise and stamina needs is worth considering carefully before you decide to have this superior dog as a pet.

All you have to do is take advantage of the fact that Goldens love the water and let them swim in a nearby lake or in the sea to get all the exercise they need. The Golden Retriever’s thick water-repellent coat keeps his body warm while swimming which comes so naturally to this superior animal.

22. They're Obedient

With the exception of the young and exuberant, Golden Retrievers are typically obedient who learn quickly and thrive on pleasing their owner. This is very important because their size and strength would make them difficult to manage if they are disobedient.
To get the best from your Golden Retriever, it is important to train him from early age to respond appropriately to your commands- a pretty simple task considering the dog’s temperament and high intelligence.
However, it is also a good idea to let a Golden use it’s own initiative sometimes rather than always being obedient. An example of this would be to let him wander freely in a natural park or on a secluded beach where he won’t disturb other users. The loyalty of a golden retriever will be clear in its performance as a watch dog. They will bark at strangers as a form of loyalty but are generally aggressive because it is not in a Golden's nature. 1. My first dog, when I was five, was a golden. Unfortunately, I had to watch her be given away to a farm, (because my parentss didn't know how much it would traumatize me.) She chewed hoses, and with a family of four, two working parents and two kids to raise, training wasn't really an option or no one thought of it. Ever since then, I've adored golden retrievers. My family seems to have a bad run with pure breds, and I'd rather adopt then go to a breeder, so I'd like to have a half golden, half something else, but with golden's look. However, I'm not thrilled about them not being good gaurd dogs, and would appreciate some gaurding qualities. Sweet dogs, hope I can have another one day.

  2. We have always had German Shepherds. Since I was a little girl my dad was a breeder and trainer. I learned to be a trainer and have never had another breed. Both my husband and I have always had GS. we are getting older now and have two GS one 4 and one 10.
I have been thinking about getting a Golden now that we are retired. I have spoke to several who have had them . They love them but have had problems with chewing. I thought because we are he now we should be able to spend most of our time with a new puppy. Our GS are both females and we don't have problems with other dogs. We spent a lot of time with our two girls and travel with them twice a year. I am curious what people think about us adopting a Golden Pup.

  3. I like that you mentioned hard working. My wife doesn't want a pet around the house, but I know that it can be a huge benefit to the home in terms of helping around. As you mentioned, a dog provides security, they can track and hunt, and a lot more as you explained. I will have to tell my wife that a golden retriever would be a great addition to our hunting cabin and hunting lifestyle and to provide a little bit of home security of course.

  4. My first Golden Retriever lived to be 18 years old. Unfortunately, my second Golden Retriever only lived to be 7 years old passing away from hemangiosarcoma. 😭

  5. A bit of advice. Goldens don't actually make good pets. Give up terms like 'owner' and 'pet'. What they are is adopted family. Adjust your thinking. As friends and family they can't be beat among dogs. Professional buddies. But pets? You as their 'owner'? Uh... no. That's not how this really works. You take a Golden home as a puppy and end up with a new member of the family. Embrace that and you will both be off to a good start. They see you as family, and it all makes more sense if you return that. They are not for living outside alone, they need to be with their family. They are not for negative discipline, they just want to make you happy, teach them how. They are always curious and can get bored (intelligence carries it's own set of problems), but love them and they will love you until their final breath. If you want a pet, get a parrot or a goldfish. If you want a canine member of the family, consider a Golden. Unless you can't stand shedding... in which case... I don't know what to tell ya. Learn to live with it. Give up black clothing. Small price to pay.

    1. Totally agree!! My Golden is my best friend and my baby :). She is not a pet or just an animal to feed and clean up after.

  6. How in the world could anyone say they don’t make good pets?!? You must have a cold heart!! They do shed, a lot! But all of that fire comes with love, devotion, personality, and intelligence. If you don’t want a pet inside, don’t get a dog, or get a goldfish. Dogs are sweet, loving creatures that depend on their owners. They give you 200 times the heart you give them.

    1. I don't think that you understood the "tongue in cheek" advice. He was saying that a Golden is and should be a family member.

  7. Hai,
Since my childhood I wanted a dog at home. But my dream came true at the age of 34 after several tries. Its being 5 years to my marriage and we lost a baby due to miscarriage at early 3 months. We both are very depressed. I wanted to come out of it as soon as possible and planned for a road trip for 2 days. But its not much of a use. Then i have decided that if god is not willing to put a human baby in our home then I will get a fur baby. without a though I got a Golden, she is 34 days when came to our home. Now its her home. We love her alot. Even people started calling me Bellu's Dad (Bellu is her name) and Bellu's Mom(to my wife). She is hardly 2 yrs now, we are enjoying our lives. thank you

  8. Our golden is the apple of my eye.
He is 12 years old and never left puppyhood.
He filled a deep void when our children left the house.
He is spoiled rotton, stinks and sheds. In other words I wouldn't change a single thing about him.

  9. BismiALLAH AlRahman AlRahim

Salaaam , means peace to all of you

Kèking a dog at a human home , means torturing this poor dog , who doesn't like to lay in a room nearly all the day , and when the socalled owner of the dog wants to go for a walk , tje dog can walk with him ona wite ,
no freedom , no chasing , no other dog -friendly activity.

  10. I have a golden retriever named Molson, and he is 10-11 years old. We also have a pure boxer named Lola, and she is 2 years old and a golden retriever/German Shepherd mix named Stella and she is a few months old. She is all black and is very energetic. And then we have 3 cats, all girls.Their names are: Pooh Bear, Rue, and Ella. We have another cat and his name is Tom but he is an outside cat and we hardly ever see him any more. I am only 12 years old and don't have a website, if that's okay. Also Molson, there is something going on with him and we don't know if he misses his dad or what, but his dad is my grandpa and he doesn't live with us. So if anyone knows what might be wrong with him please comment. Thank you. Molson also won't eat at all. It started last night when we fed the dogs at around 6:00 that he would eat. He didn't eat any of his food not even a little.

    1. Lola, I am so sorry Molson didn't want to eat. You sound like a wonderful dog person. Be kind and gentle with Molson. Golden's do miss "their people" or "person". Try to console him, be happy with him. If he continues to be sad or not eat, see if your parents will call and take him to your veterinarian. Thank you for being so concerned about your special boy Golden.

  11. Golden's ate great but , I lost my Holly after double knee surgery. She had a loose blood clot a week after the operation. She was great dog and had me well trained. I am still looking for another Golden
